A scenic road through pristine Minnesota forest between Grand Marais on the North Shore of Lake Superior and the edge of Canada’s Quetico National Park.
Truly wild, the 57-mile Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway is where outdoor adventures begin. With its start in the scenic harbor town of Grand Marais, the Byway rolls inland from Lake Superior on paved roads through the Superior National Forest. You won’t find towns along the route, but side roads lead to resorts, campgrounds, canoe outfitters and boat ramps. Many of the lakes are within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which is mostly paddle only. With plenty of lakes and miles of trails, opportunities for fishing, hiking and cross-country skiing are on tap. Wildlife abounds, so there’s a chance of spotting deer, moose or bear, seeing a wide variety of birds, or hearing the howls of wolves.
